Did you know pH is a chemical abbreviation of the French words ‘potentiel hydrogène’ – hydrogen potential? And that the numeral(s) indicate a measure of the acidity level? On average the skin’s pH is 4.5 - 5.5 meaning healthy skin is slightly acidic. A pH of 7 (that of pure water) is considered neutral. Anything below that is acidic and above it alkaline, so skin's natural pH is mildly acidic. This level of acidity plays a key role in how effective the skin’s barrier function is. The best skincare is pH balanced because any significant change in the skin’s pH can result in skin problems such as sensitivity, hypersensitivity, redness, irritation, dryness and blemishes.
